Advice for Avoiding Entrepreneur Burnout

July 9, 2019

Small business owners work hard—it’s just the absolute truth. Even more so, small business owners work around-the-clock, often on weekends and go above and beyond the normal output expected of many employees in the 9 to 5 world. While this can be highly rewarding—and there can be no other choice to really get a company off the ground—this can also bring about some adverse effects, such as burnout.

That’s right, you read it correctly—burnout.

Burnout can be inevitable for entrepreneurs and managing it accordingly is critical for success—not just for your business, but also for your health, sanity and well-being. Because of this, we’re going to examine some tips on how to avoid burnout so you can stay on top of things without losing track of yourself.

Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize. It's common to want to do everything all at once. Often small business owners have a lot coming at them—whether through email or on the phone. It’s important to prioritize your work so you can be more present for the things that really matter. In other words, paying your electric bill is a priority over emails that can wait until Monday!

Disconnect. You have to take a break, which is why it’s important to disconnect and take time off. Yes, this may seem impossible for small business owners who love what they do, especially in the early stages of their career, but being able to take some time to get away or even embrace a stay-cation can go a long way towards your mental health.

Look for inspiration. This is an important one that is often overlooked. When we are so bogged down with responsibilities, it’s common to lose inspiration on the day-to-day. By implementing inspiration into your daily life—whether it’s a walk in nature or a long walk with your dog, you are able to get back in touch with that place of awe and wonder, which many entrepreneurs are known for in the first place.

At the end of the day, take care of yourself—your body and mind is the vehicle that will bring your brilliant idea to life. But without it, you can’t function!
